fable 5 is not for you. (yet.)
fable 5 is incredible if you know exactly what to point it at. if you don't, you're lighting dollars on fire. free until june 23.
i went quiet on fable 5 because i had mixed feelings.
at first? holy hell. the mythos-class model everyone's been whispering about finally drops to the public. you assume a model this expensive just… makes you rich. that's the fantasy.
i used it. it builds beautiful websites. it found bugs and tightened up some security edges in my trading bots.
but here's the thing — i could've done all that with opus 4.8. a little tweaking and i'd have hit the same result, without getting rate-limited 30 minutes into a session on the $100 plan.
so what is fable 5 actually for?
it's for when you have capital and you're willing to burn it to hit a goal — and you KNOW exactly what that goal is. that part isn't optional. point it at something vague and you're just lighting dollars on fire. point it at something specific and let it run for hours, even days: building, overseeing, scanning for errors and optimizations you'd never catch yourself. the longer and harder the task, the more its lead shows.
this might be the first model that could actually run around the clock making money off a single prompt. but "make me money" with no plan isn't a strategy, it's a donation. you'd need to wire it into an agent setup and pre-load all your account context up front so it doesn't waste hours — and tokens — rediscovering what it already could've known.
one thing i'll give it: in my runs, when it caught itself looping, it timed out instead of spiraling and draining my balance. small thing. matters when every token costs.
bottom line — fable 5 is incredible for the people and companies that can afford it. most people won't even get to experience what it's good at, because of the price. maybe once more data centers come online the cost drops, or it gets folded into the normal plans the way opus is now.
until then: try it while it's free. anthropic pulls it from the included plans on june 23 — after that you're paying with usage credits.
the tool isn't the moat. knowing what to point it at is.
for the ones who do.
